TSPcenter's future

Post by mjedlin66 »

Life is changing, as life does, and I have decided to discontinue my involvement with TSPcenter. The "Live Charts" and "Technical" tabs will be copied over to TSPcalc. However, the forum and fantasyTSP will not.

If someone wants to run it, they can have it. I will transfer all code and database to a new owner. You'll need your own server.

Otherwise I will shut the website down at the end of this year.

It's been fun.

Say it ain't so! I hope someone can continue it, I've learned a lot and check this site nearly every day. Thanks for taking it over and continuing it as long as you did, and I'm especially glad to hear TSPCalc will continue!

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication! Hoping a new owner will take over the site before the end of the year.

I love this site. Thank you very much for keeping it going. Sounds like it could be an interesting retirement job (or hobby). I wouldn't want to take it on by myself, but I might be interested if any others wanted to join in? I wonder if there would be any way to get a tax write-off out of it?

Thanks MJ! i know this website doesn't do much in terms of revenue. I do spend a lot of time browsing here and learning new things. I also understand your need to move onto other things.

Thanks for hosting this and as everyone else said, I hope someone finds a way to keep this going.

Best,

Bubba

I would say $50/month or less. It could be substantially cheaper, maybe even $10/month.

A lot of web hosts run promo rates. TSPcalc used to run on a 3-year rate locked web hosting plan at bluehost. It worked but ultimately I ended up needing a better server specifically for TSPcalc.

TSPcenter’s database isn’t as big. Running on a cheaper plan it will likely take longer to do the nightly calculations but it should still work.

You might be able to get a 12/24/36 month rate lock for around $10/month which jumps as high as $50/month after the promo ends.

What I really want out of though is the time. TSPcenter is overall very stable. It doesn’t need a “lot”. I did have to code a fix when the TSP launched the new L fund.

But I don’t want to deal with bug fixes anymore. I want it to be someone else’s job. Like right now the live charts jump some time after close. I have known about it for months but I haven’t fixed it.

So if someone takes it over I want to be clear that I really don’t want to help or answer questions after it’s moved.

I truly have appreciated this site and the time you and others have donated freely. It has changed my investing and has truly given me courage to move my money watching others. The FB group doesnt show their actual moves and their actual returns. This site is like putting your money where your mouth is. Anyone can give advise... I can see ACTUAL ;moves and the coincidence of that move. I would pay.

MJ - it's not clear to me if the server remains physically in your home or is virtualized elsewhere. If the former, could/should it be moved to the cloud? The notion of assuming ownership/responsibility for a physical device is daunting.
